Mummification
Mummification was a very important part of the Egyptians culture. They wanted the dead to look human and to be preserved.
The Ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the desert. The heat of the sand dehydrated the bodies fast creating life like mummies. Later, the Egyptians started to bury their dead in coffins because, they wanted to protect them from animals. But, when they did this the dead was not exposed to the sun and was not getting dehydrated. Over the centuries the Egyptians started to preserve their bodies so they would remain lifelike. The process included embalming, to treat a body with preservatives to keep it looking lifelike, the bodies and wrapping them in strips of linen. We call this process today mummification.
